모두 여름을 잘 보내고 계시기를 바랍니다. 올해 여름은 기록적인 무더위가 계속되고 있습니다. 건강 잘 챙기시고, 충분한 수분 섭취로 안전하게 보내시길 바랍니다!

청소년부 여름 수련회 후기

여름 수련회를 위해 함께 기도해 주신 모든 부모님들께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 하나님의 은혜 가운데 이번 수련회는 큰 사고나 부상 없이(저만 아팠습니다 ????) 잘 마칠 수 있었습니다.

몇 날 며칠을 함께 보내며 우리 학생들과 시간을 보낼 수 있었던 것은 저에게도 큰 기쁨이었습니다. 학생들이 진심으로 예배드리고 간절히 기도하는 모습을 보며, 청소년부를 향한 제 사역의 동기와 열정을 다시금 새롭게 할 수 있었습니다. 강사 목사님께서는 그리스도를 통해 나타난 하나님의 사랑의 충분하심과, 하나님께서 얼마나 신뢰할 만하신 분이신지에 대해 꼭 필요한 말씀을 전해 주셨습니다.

 

특별히 감사했던 것은 평소 청소년부 활동에 많이 참여하지 못했던 학생들이 수련회에 참석하여 새로운 친구들을 사귀고 마음을 열기 시작한 모습이었습니다.

수련회를 마치고 교회에서 식사를 준비해 주신 부모님들, 간식과 아이스크림을 직접 가져다주신 집사님들, 그리고 수련회 기간 동안 헌신적으로 섬겨 주신 청소년부 교사들과 봉사자분들께도 깊이 감사드립니다.

한편, 몇몇 부모님들께서는 수련회 일정이 늦게 공지되어 자녀들의 여름 계획과 일정이 겹쳤다는 아쉬움을 전해 주셨습니다. 내년에도 청소년부 여름 수련회는 7월 4일 독립기념일이 포함된 주간에 진행될 예정입니다. 이는 모든 Year-round School Track이 동시에 방학인 유일한 기간이기 때문입니다. 내년 여름 계획을 세우실 때 참고해 주시기 바랍니다.

앞으로의 말씀 교육 안내

최근 저는 매주 1시간의 주일예배와 1시간의 성경공부만으로는 예수 그리스도의 복음이 요구하는 충분한 영적 성장과 삶의 변화가 이루어지기 어렵다는 확신을 더욱 갖게 되었습니다. 이것은 교회 프로그램 참여를 더 많이 요구하려는 뜻이 아닙니다. 오히려 하나님께서 영적 성장을 이루시는 가장 중요한 장소는 가정이라는 성경의 가르침을 다시 인정하자는 것입니다.

신명기 6:6–7

"오늘 내가 네게 명하는 이 말씀을 너는 마음에 새기고 네 자녀에게 부지런히 가르치며 집에 앉았을 때에든지 길을 갈 때에든지 누워 있을 때에든지 일어날 때에든지 이 말씀을 강론할 것이며"

에베소서 6:1–4

"자녀들아 주 안에서 너희 부모에게 순종하라... 또 아비들아 너희 자녀를 노엽게 하지 말고 오직 주의 교훈과 훈계로 양육하라."

이러한 이유로 한마음 청소년부의 사명 선언문을 조금 수정하는 것이 필요하다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 현재의 사명은 다음과 같습니다.

"한마음 청소년부는 하나님을 사랑하고, 서로 사랑하며, 세상을 사랑하는 제자를 세우기 위해 존재합니다."

여기에 부모님들과 함께 제자훈련을 감당하겠다는 우리의 의지를 담아 다음과 같이 수정하고자 합니다.

"한마음 청소년부는 하나님을 사랑하고, 서로 사랑하며, 세상을 사랑하는 제자를 세울 수 있도록 가정을 준비시키고 부모님들을 돕고 세우기 위해 존재합니다."

앞으로 저는 부모님들께 가정예배를 격려하는 자료와 청소년부에서 무엇을 배우고 있는지에 대한 안내를 더욱 자주 제공하려고 합니다. 그 첫걸음으로, 일부 청소년부 교사들이 학생들에게 나누어 주고 있는 다음 주 성경공부와 설교 예습 자료를 부모님들과도 함께 나누고자 합니다.

대학생들은 강의를 듣기 전에 교재를 미리 읽도록 권장받습니다. 동일한 내용을 여러 번 접할수록 기억과 이해가 훨씬 좋아진다는 연구 결과가 있기 때문입니다. 같은 원리로 학생들이 주일 전에 본문을 미리 읽고 예배에 참석한다면, 말씀을 더욱 적극적으로 듣고 깊이 생각하며 영적으로 더욱 큰 변화를 경험할 수 있으리라 기대합니다.

부모님들께서도 자녀들에게 예습 자료를 함께 살펴보도록 격려해 주시고, 가능하다면 가정예배에서도 적극 활용해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 

Sunday School Preview

지역사회 섬김 프로젝트

노스캐롤라이나 침례교 총회에서는 지역 교회들이 한 주간 집중적으로 지역사회를 섬기며 예수님의 사랑을 실천하도록 독려하고 있습니다. 우리 교회 목회진 역시 복음은 말뿐 아니라 삶으로도 드러나야 한다는 확신 가운데 이 사역에 함께 참여하고자 합니다. 또한 이러한 모습을 학생들에게 직접 보여 주고 함께 경험하게 하는 것이 매우 중요하다고 믿습니다. 작년에는 우리 교회가 Kristen Marie Lane과 NC-54 도로 주변의 쓰레기를 줍는 봉사활동에 참여했습니다.

올해도 교회는 같은 봉사를 계속할 예정이며, 청소년부는 인근의 미국 교회인 South Durham Church와 함께 교회에서 약 2마일 떨어진 Lowe's Grove Middle School의 환경을 정비하고 아름답게 가꾸는 봉사활동에 참여할 예정입니다. 

봉사활동은 8월 둘째 주에 진행될 예정이며, 초등부 VBS 일정과 일부 겹칠 가능성이 있습니다. 자세한 내용은 추후 다시 안내드리겠습니다.

Fri Aug 28th - Sat Aug 29th	Praise and Prayer Night + Lock-in	NCYC에 함께 참여하는 교회들과 청소년부에서는 학생들 간의 교제를 한 해 동안 계속 이어가기 위해 연합 찬양집회를 마련하게 되었습니다. 이번 집회는 노스캐롤라이나주 그린즈버러에서 열릴 예정입니다.   찬양집회가 밤 9시 또는 10시쯤 마칠 예정이라 부모님들께서 자녀들을 데리러 오시는 데 어려움이 있을 수 있어, 집회 후에는 **한마음교회 청소년부 학생들만 함께하는 철야 친교(Lock-in)**를 교회에서 진행하려고 합니다.  개학을 앞둔 마지막 여름밤을 친구들과 함께 즐겁고 의미 있게 보내며 좋은 추억을 만들 수 있도록 자녀들을 보내 주시기 바랍니다.

 

기도 제목

• 여름 청소년부 교제 및 기도 모임을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 학생들의 마음에 믿음의 씨앗이 심겨지고 풍성한 열매를 맺으며, 어려움과 스트레스를 만날 때 하나님께 나아가는 기도의 습관을 배우게 되기를 바랍니다.

• Daniel Chang 선생님을 위해 기도해 주십시오. Daniel 선생님은 미 육군에 입대하여 이번 달 말 기초군사훈련을 받기 위해 청소년부를 떠나게 됩니다. 지난 2년 동안 청소년부를 신실하게 섬겨 주셨으며, 올해 5월 대학을 졸업했습니다. 장기적으로는 군 복무를 마친 후 로스쿨에 진학할 계획을 가지고 있습니다. 하나님께서 군 생활 가운데 안전하게 지켜 주시고 앞으로의 계획도 인도해 주시도록 기도해 주십시오.

• Kayla Lopez 선생님을 위해 기도해 주십시오. Kayla 선생님은 가족과 함께 고향인 뉴저지로 이주하게 되었습니다. 비록 1년이 채 되지 않는 기간 동안 섬기셨지만, 학생들이 안전하게 교제하고 솔직한 질문을 나눌 수 있는 환경을 만들기 위해 많은 사랑과 헌신을 보여 주셨습니다. 최근 채혈사(Phlebotomy) 과정을 마쳤으며 뉴저지에서 관련 분야의 직장을 구할 예정입니다. 새로운 환경에 잘 적응하고 하나님을 계속해서 기쁨으로 섬길 수 있는 좋은 교회를 만나도록 함께 기도해 주십시오.

• 새로운 청소년부 교사들을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 과밀한 반을 나누고, 아동 안전을 위해 모든 교실에 교사 두 명씩 배치하는 목표를 이룰 수 있도록 하나님께서 필요한 일꾼들을 보내 주시기를 기도해 주십시오.

Hello Hanmaum Youth Parents!

I hope summer travels have been treating you all well. This summer is featuring record-setting temperatures. Please keep safe and well-hydrated!  

Youth Retreat Recap

Thank you all so much for your prayers surrounding the summer youth retreat. The retreat was a great success without any injuries or sicknesses (besides myself ????) The kids were such a blessing to be with during the several days we had together. Seeing them worship hard and pray sincerely was a great reminder and motivation for my ministry efforts. The guest speaker shared a deeply needed message about the sufficiency of God’s love through Christ and his trustworthiness. 

I was especially grateful to see members of our youth group who are not as deeply involved come to the retreat, make friends, and open up more. Thank you to all the parents who prepared the return meal at church, the deacons who drove to deliver snacks and icecream, and the youth teachers/volunteers who helped throughout the retreat. 

Some parents expressed disappointment regarding the timing of the retreat as they came to know the dates too late or had conflicting summer plans for their children. I can say with confidence that next year’s retreat will also take place during the week of the July 4th holiday as this is the only week in which all the year-round-school tracks are all on break at the same time. Please plan accordingly!

Lesson Plan Previews

It is my growing conviction that a 1 hour weekly worship service and 1 hour weekly bible study are insufficient for the adequate spiritual formation and life transformation that the gospel of Jesus call us to. This is not a call for more church activity participation, but rather a recognition of the fact that God’s biblical design for the process of spiritual formation to take place primarily in the context of the family unit.   

Deuteronomy 6:6–7: "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." 

Ephesians 6:1-4: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

With this in mind, I think it is necessary to adjust the mission statement of our Hanmaum Youth Group. The mission statement as it exists is: “Hanmaum Youth Group exists to raise disciples who Love God, Love One Another, and Love the World.” I propose adding a clause which emphasizes our commitment to partner with families and parents in the discipleship process. “Hanmaum Youth Group exists to equip and empower families to raise disciples who Love God, Love One Another, and Love the World.” 

I will be redoubling my efforts to create and distribute content to the youth parents to encourage family worship and over-communicate what we are teaching and discussing with the students in our Sunday School classes. Towards this end, I want to share this document that some youth teachers have been distributing to their youth students to inform them of what we will be teaching in the upcoming week’s Bible study lesson and sermon. In college, students are encouraged to read the textbook before their lecture because studies show that overall retention and recall improves through multiple exposures to the same content. In the same way, the youth teachers hope that by getting exposed to the upcoming week’s reading before the Sunday worship and Bible study students will be better prepared to listen actively, engage mentally, and be transformed spiritually.

NC Serve

The North Carolina Baptist State Convention is challenging and empowering local Baptist churches to step up and show the love of Jesus to our local communities through a concentrated week of service to our communities. The Pastoral leadership is keen to answer this challenge as we are convinced that the gospel must be displayed in word and deed. It is crucial that we teach and demonstrate this truth to our students. 

Last year our church participated by picking up garbage along the side of the road on Kristen Marie Lane and NC-54. While our church plans to repeat this service activity this year, the youth group will partner up with South Durham Church, a local American congregation, to beautify and improve Lowe’s Grove Middle School, located less than two miles away from our church building. The volunteering will happen on the second week of August, likely overlapping with the Elementary VBS dates and times. Please be on the look out for more information.

Fri Aug 28th - Sat Aug 29th	Praise and Prayer Night + Lock-in	The churches and youth groups involved in NCYC wanted to set up a mid-year event to maintain fellowship between our students, so we are having a joint Praise Night in Greensboro, NC. Because the praise night will likely end at around 9 or 10pm and this may cause difficulty for parents in procuring rides for their kids, we will conclude the night with a lock-in held at our church with just our youth students. Please send your kids to have one last summer fling before the start of the school year.

 

Prayer Requests

• Pray for our youth summer fellowship and prayer nights to plant seeds and bear fruit. I hope that it can help teach and develop a habit of prayer in our students so that they can use it to run to God in times of difficulty and stress.  

• Pray for Daniel Chang 선생님 who has signed with the US Army and will be leaving our youth group to go to basic training at the end of this month. Daniel has served our youth group faithfully for the past two years and just graduated from college this past May. His long term plan is to go to Law School after his term of service. Please pray for his safety and blessings on his future plans. 

• Pray for Kayla Lopez 선생님 who will be moving with her family back to their home state of New Jersey. Kayla has been serving our youth group faithfully for less than a year, but has taken great care and initiative in providing opportunities for our children to have fellowship and a safe place to ask honest questions. She is wrapping up a phlebotomy program and will be seeking employment in that field after moving to New Jersey. Pray for her and her family to adjust well and to find a wonderful church community where she can continue to serve God and his Kingdom. 

• Pray for new youth teachers so that we can split up some of our overcrowded classes and reach our goal of having two teachers per class for child safety purposes.
