Worship Renewal

I was in a conversation with some other youth leaders about how we provide follow-up care to our students after retreats and revivals. As we talked, the discussion brought up a serious conundrum that many of our churches faced: often, it was the same kids who were jumping up and down, crying, and praying loudly at the retreat who were sitting quietly in Sunday worship uninterested and disengaged after the retreat. How could there be such a difference in attitude during their worship? Could it be that they encountered a different God at the retreat than the one we call on in our regular Sunday service? In my confusion, I often blamed the kids themselves, thinking that they must have gotten caught up in their emotions or the crowd 분이기 during the event, instead of really meeting God. Then I started blaming aspects of the retreat itself - compared to normal Sunday worship service, the songs were too emotional, the lights were too dark, the speaker was too charismatic.    

But recently, I have been challenged on if the problem lies with our concept of “normal” Sunday worship. When I come to church, do I really expect to have an encounter with the living God? Do I expect and depend on the students to be active participants in this collective endeavor of Worship, or am I content with their mere attendance? This is a humbling change of thought because much of this responsibility falls upon myself. 

Because our youth group does not currently have a mid-week meeting, our Sunday worship service has to do more of the heavy lifting in the spiritual formation of the youth children in our church. Our worship service must communicate effectively what we want our youth students to think, feel, and do in response to God’s revelation. This communication happens not just through the explicit words spoken during the sermon, but also through the songs we sing, the way we pray, what we pray for, and our attitude as we participate all contribute. 

Kids who say they only experience God’s presence at retreats may be confusing the feeling caused by the lights, crowds, and ambiance with something spiritual. But it may also be possible that our youth group’s worship environment teaches that God is okay with mere attendance rather than full participation.

After discussing with the youth teachers, we have decided to make an intentional effort of maximizing ways in which youth students can be active participants in our Sunday worship. We will be asking students to lead scripture readings, share testimonies, do announcements, and hopefully more in the future. If you hear about your child helping lead our worship service in any of these ways, please show interest and help them in their preparation. If it is for scripture reading, have them read the passage out loud to the family to build their confidence. If it is for sharing testimonies, help them write it or listen to it and give them encouraging feedback. 

And if any parent would like to come sit in the youth worship service, please feel free to do so. We welcome you. Please continue to pray for our youth group to grow in number and in maturity. Pray for our worship service to become a place where our children can participate in the life of God.

Prayer Requests

• Pray for our youth Sunday worship gatherings as we change some things around to better teach our students about worship. 

• Pray for our PTA group as we close out the present year of ministry. Thank God for 박연선 전도사님 for stepping up to volunteer as we needed a leader after the end of last year. 

• Last month I wrote for us to pray for two new youth teachers. Thank God for answering our prayer through John Kim 선생님’s return. We are still looking to recruit one additional teacher.  

• Praise God for new volunteers in the Immanuel Ministry. Ask God that he would give myself and church leadership wisdom to help serve and grow this area more. Ask that he would now send us a harvest of people to serve and show his love through this ministry.  

• Pray for the graduating senior class and the preparations for the senior banquet. In previous years, the senior banquet was a small event with just the Junior and Senior classes, but I want all the youth students to come together to help celebrate each of the leaders and models that we have in this year’s senior class. This is one of our biggest events we have planned for the spring, so we ask that if you are willing and able to help in the preparations this year.

최근 다른 유스 사역자들과 함께 수련회와 부흥회 이후 학생들을 어떻게 지속적으로 돌볼 수 있을지에 대해 이야기를 나눌 기회가 있었습니다. 그 대화 가운데 많은 교회들이 공통적으로 겪고 있는 한 가지 고민이 나왔습니다. 수련회에서는 뜨겁게 찬양하고, 울며 기도하고, 열정적으로 반응하던 학생들이, 수련회 이후 주일 예배에서는 조용히 앉아 무관심하고 소극적인 모습으로 있는 경우가 많다는 점이었습니다.

왜 이렇게 예배에 대한 태도가 달라질까요? 혹시 수련회에서 만난 하나님과 주일 예배에서 우리가 부르는 하나님이 다른 분이기 때문일까요?

이 질문 앞에서 저는 혼란스러웠고, 종종 그 원인을 아이들에게서 찾곤 했습니다. 단순히 분위기나 감정에 휩쓸린 것이 아닐까 생각하기도 했고, 수련회 자체의 요소들—더 감정적인 찬양, 어두운 조명, 카리스마 있는 강사—을 문제로 보기도 했습니다.

하지만 최근에는 “평소의 주일 예배”에 대한 우리의 생각 자체에 문제가 있는 것은 아닌지 도전을 받게 되었습니다. 나는 교회에 올 때 정말 살아계신 하나님을 만날 것을 기대하고 있는가? 학생들이 예배의 적극적인 참여자가 되기를 기대하고 있는가, 아니면 단순히 자리에 앉아 있는 것만으로도 만족하고 있는가?

이러한 질문은 저 자신을 돌아보게 만드는 매우 겸손한 도전이었습니다. 왜냐하면 그 책임의 많은 부분이 저에게 있기 때문입니다.

현재 저희 유스그룹은 주중 모임이 없기 때문에, 주일 예배가 아이들의 영적 형성에 있어서 더 큰 역할을 감당해야 합니다. 예배는 하나님께서 자신을 드러내실 때, 우리가 무엇을 생각하고, 느끼고, 어떻게 반응해야 하는지를 분명하게 전달해야 합니다.

이러한 전달은 설교 말씀뿐만 아니라, 우리가 부르는 찬양, 드리는 기도, 무엇을 위해 기도하는지, 그리고 예배에 참여하는 우리의 태도 모두를 통해 이루어집니다.

수련회에서만 하나님의 임재를 느낀다고 말하는 학생들은 조명이나 분위기, 사람들로 인해 생긴 감정을 영적인 경험으로 착각했을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 동시에, 우리의 유스 예배 환경이 “단순히 참석만 해도 괜찮다”는 메시지를 주고 있었을 가능성도 있습니다.

이러한 고민을 바탕으로, 유스 교사들과 함께 논의한 결과, 학생들이 주일 예배에 더 적극적으로 참여할 수 있도록 의도적인 변화를 시도하기로 했습니다. 앞으로 학생들에게 성경 봉독, 간증 나눔, 광고 전달 등 다양한 역할을 맡길 예정이며, 앞으로 더 많은 참여의 기회를 만들어가고자 합니다.

자녀가 이러한 역할로 예배를 섬기게 된다면, 관심을 가져주시고 준비를 도와주시기를 부탁드립니다.

성경봉독 이라면, 가정에서 소리 내어 읽어보도록 도와주셔서 자신감을 키워주시고,

간증이라면 함께 글을 정리해 보거나 들어보시고 따뜻한 격려를 해주시면 큰 도움이 됩니다.

또한, 원하시는 학부모님들께서는 언제든지 유스 예배에 함께 참여하실 수 있습니다. 언제나 환영합니다.

앞으로도 유스 공동체가 수적으로, 또 영적으로 계속 성장할 수 있도록 기도해주시기 바랍니다. 우리의 예배가 아이들이 하나님과 함께하는 삶에 실제로 참여하는 자리가 되도록 함께 기도해주시길 부탁드립니다.
