Hello parents!
The end of the school year has come and the summer months are upon us. I’m excited to share a few plans that we have for the summer and give a much-needed update on our upcoming summer youth retreat.
Senior Banquet Review
While I was in Korea, the SALT team was hard at work planning and preparing for the senior banquet. For many of them, it was their first time preparing and executing an event on their own and though there were some technical and logistical difficulties, overall, I think they put together a sweet send off for the senior class. The 11th grade class moms worked very diligently to prepare the food for the event which helped things move along smoothly. During the event I reflected on how grateful I was for all of those involved. It truly is a beautiful blessing to be able to watch the kids grow and develop into adults as the youth pastor.

Updates to the Calendar Events
There were some items on the calendar from last month that have undergone some small, but significant changes.

Promotion Sunday is on June 15th, not June 8th. This means that June 8th is the last day that we will be in our present classes.

There had been discussion about changing the date of the retreat to allow for a single three day event instead of separate, shorter retreats for middle and high school. I myself had desired this outcome as well. However, upon contacting the retreat center host after returning from Korea, there seems to have been a miscommunication about the reservation for the date to do so. After considering rescheduling the retreat or looking for a new location, I think it would be best if we moved forward with the original plan to have a separate retreat for middle school and high school. So those dates are what are displayed above. You will note that it is unchanged from the previous calendar sent out last month. I will discuss my reasons for doing the retreat in this manner below.

Isn’t an overnight retreat too short?
The trend over the last three years, retreat participation has been on the decline. Last year, even after moving the retreat date to better fit around family schedules, we were only able to have 17 students attend. It may have been a one time fluke, but I think it may point to a bigger trend where it is becoming increasingly difficult for our youth students to carve out the time in their schedules to attend overnight events that span multiple days. Although long retreats can be fun and enjoy a place of tradition in our church, I think it worth experimenting with other formats to better fit the life demands of our children. After trying it this year, I may decide I was wrong and choose to go back to the previous format next year. However, please let us try it all together.
Why have a separate retreat for middle school and high school?
I am finding that in our present youth group, the middle school kids and high school kids have different needs and areas of growth. By doing the retreat separately for middle school and high school, I think we can meet those needs more specifically and in creative ways.
Some students and parents have suggested that doing separate retreats for middle school and high school may increase the divide between the younger and older students in the youth group. I am also aware of this difficulty. There is some validity to these concerns, and I have some ideas and plans to mitigate this effect. However, I would also like to remind us that our single uniting factor as God’s church is not the shared social experience of having fun together (as important as that is), but is Jesus’ impact in our lives. I hope, pray and expect the Holy Spirit to unite our youth group as we draw closer to God.
Prayer Nights
If there is one piece of heritage that the Korean church can proudly pass along to the children of our next generation, it is our dependence on the power of prayer. Whatever else it becomes under my influence, I hope the youth group becomes a prayerful community. Last year, we tried these prayer meetings for the first time, and though the attendance was generally only a small number of students, it was a very sweet time of ministry. Please encourage your children to come pray during these bi-weekly prayer meetings.
Prayer Requests

Pray for the volunteers and I as we prepare for the summer youth retreat. Please pray for the students who do not yet know Jesus to have an encounter with Him, and for the rest of the youth group to grow in maturity and faith.

Pray for the new church members whom God is preparing to send to our area during the summer months. Also pray for the youth students to be welcoming to visiting kids to provide a church family for the people God sends our way.

Pray for the outgoing seniors to go and find God’s purpose for their lives. Also pray for the incoming 5th graders who will be joining our youth group to be incorporated well by their 형’s and 누나’s.

부모님들께!
학기말이 다가오고, 여름이 성큼 가까이 왔습니다. 이 뉴스레터에서는 여름에 있을 몇 가지 계획들을 기대하는 마음으로 나누고, 여름 수련회에 대한 업데이트를 하려고 합니다.
졸업생 파티
제가 한국에 있는 동안에, SALT team 이 졸업생 파티를 계획하고 열심히 준비하였습니다. 대부분의 리더들에게 이렇게 스스로 행사를 준비하고 진행하는 것이 처음이었습니다. 기술적인 부분과 진행상의 어려움이 좀 있었지만, 전체적으로 볼 때, 졸업생들에게 좋은 송별회의 시간을 준비했습니다. 11학년 학부모님들께서 행사를 위해 음식을 정성껏 준비해 주셔서 순조롭게 진행될 수 있었습니다. 행사를 진행하는 동안 저는 참여해 주신 모든 분들께 얼마나 감사한지 새삼 느꼈습니다. 청소년부 담임목사로서, 아이들이 어른으로 성장하는 모습을 지켜볼 수 있다는 것은 참으로 아름다운 축복입니다.

행사 달력 업데이트
지난달 일정에는 작지만 중요한 변경 사항이 몇 가지 있었습니다.

진급주일은 6월 8일이 아니라 6월 15일입니다. 즉, 6월 8일이 현재 반에서 보내는 마지막 날입니다.

중·고등학생을 위한 따로의 미니 수련회 대신, 한꺼번에 2박 3일행사로 수련회 날짜를 변경하는 것에 대한 논의가 있었습니다. 저 또한 그렇게 되길 원했습니다. 그러나 한국에서 돌아온 후 수련회 센터에 연락해 보니 날짜 예약에 대한 오해가 있었던 것 같습니다. 수련회 일정을 조정하거나 새로운 장소를 찾는 것을 고려해 본 결과, 중·고등학생을 위한 별도의 수련회를 가지는 원래 계획을 진행하는 것이 최선이라는 생각합니다. 따라서 위에 표시된 날짜는 해당 날짜입니다. 지난달에 알려드린 일정과 변경되지 않은 것을 확인하실 수 있습니다. 이러한 방식으로 수련회를 진행하게 된 이유는 아래에서 설명하겠습니다.

일박 수련회는 너무 짧지 않나요?
지난 3년간 수련회 참여율은 감소 추세를 보였습니다. 작년에는 가족 일정에 맞춰 수련회 날짜를 조정했음에도 불구하고, 17명의 학생만 참석할 수 있었습니다. 이는 일시적인 현상이었을 수도 있지만, 청소년 학생들이 2박 이상의 행사에 참석할 시간을 내기가 점점 더 어려워지고 있는 더 큰 추세를 보여주는 것일 수도 있다고 생각합니다. 긴 수련회는 재미있고 우리 교회의 전통이기도 하지만, 아이들의 스케줄에 더 잘 부합하는 다른 형식을 시도해 볼 가치가 있다고 생각합니다. 올해 시도해 보고 나서, 제 생각이 틀렸다고 판단하여 내년에는 이전 형식으로 돌아갈 수도 있습니다. 하지만 우리 모두 함께 시도해 보면 좋겠습니다다.
중학교와 고등학교를 위한 별도의 수련회가 필요한 이유는 무엇인가요?
현재 우리 유스그룹에서는 중학생과 고등학생의 각각 다른 필요와 성장 영역이 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 중학생과 고등학생을 위한 수양회를 따로 진행하면 그 필요를 더욱 구체적이고 창의적인 방식으로 충족시킬 수 있을 것이라고 생각합니다.
일부 학생들과 학부모님들은 중학교와 고등학교 수련회를 따로하는 것이 유스 그룹 내 저학년과 고학년 학생들 간의 격차를 심화시킬 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다. 저도 이러한 어려움을 잘 알고 있습니다. 이러한 우려는 어느 정도 타당성이 있으며, 이러한 문제를 완화하기 위한 몇 가지 아이디어와 계획이 있습니다. 하지만, 하나님의 교회로서 우리를 하나로 묶는 유일한 요소는 함께 즐거운 시간을 보내는 사회적 경험(물론 중요하지만)이 아니라, 우리 삶에 예수님께서 끼치시는 영향이라는 점을 다시 한번 기억하기를 원합니다. 저는 성령님께서 우리 유스그룹을 하나로 묶어 하나님께 더 가까이 나아가게 해 주시기를 소망하고 기도하며 기대합니다.
기도의 밤
한국 교회가 다음 세대 자녀들에게 자랑스럽게 물려줄 수 있는 유산이 하나 있다면, 바로 기도의 힘에 의지하는 것입니다. 제 영향력 아래 어떤 일이 일어나든, 유스그룹이 기도하는 공동체가 되기를 바랍니다. 작년에 처음으로 이 기도 모임을 시도했는데, 참석 학생 수는 적었지만 매우 은혜로운 사역의 시간이었습니다. 자녀들이 격주 수요 기도 모임에 참석하여 기도하도록 격려해 주세요.
